As reported earlier in thegarlic, detailed analysis of various polls and inside polling by Mr Romney’s team appear to show that Mitt Romney is trailing President Obama in the gay community, the Latino community as well as with women voters. To deal with these areas of low popularity, Mr Romney had announced the GLOW campaign. This campaign essentially involved finding a suitable vice-presidential candidate that is gay, Latino and a woman. Mr Romney’s staff have now confirmed that it was not possible to find a suitable GLOW candidate so they decided to pick the next best candidate, Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan is not gay, he is not latino and he is not a woman. Paul Ryam has however insisted that he will be able to attract more GLOW votes to the Romeny campaign than the campaign would have attracted without him

Ryan’s proposed changes to Medicare — he would partially privatize the program — will become the principal focus of the campaign to attract the GLOW voters. This is in spite of the fact that a new survey conducted by the Washington Post found that 58% of American voters want Medicare left alone. The poll, which examines in detail the internal divisions in both parties, found that only one of five Republican groups, those who most strongly support the tea party movement, favor something like the changes Ryan has advocated.

Ryan is however not worried about the poll results. He believes the polls are just random results. Ryan believes he can change sufficient number of minds to make a difference. It now remains to be seen if he can really do that.
